The Care Certificate is a set of 16 standards that defines the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of people new to health and social care in England. Employers commonly use it as the framework for induction training, alongside their own local induction and mandatory training.
You can complete the knowledge learning online with this course. The Care Certificate itself also needs practical assessment, where a suitable assessor in your workplace observes your competence and signs it off. This course prepares you for that stage but does not replace it.
The Care Certificate is a set of standards, not a regulated qualification. It is not a legal requirement for every role, but CQC-regulated providers must assess new staff’s training needs, and many expect new care workers to work towards it during induction.
The guided learning time is 11 hours 42 minutes. Because the course is self-paced with lifetime access, you can split it across several days or weeks, work on your phone or laptop, and return to any standard whenever you need a refresher.
In March 2025 the framework grew from 15 standards to 16. Standard 16 is a new standard on awareness of learning disability and autism. This course covers all 16, so it reflects the current framework rather than the older 15-standard version.
The Care Certificate does not usually expire, and it can move with you between employers. However, many employers ask staff to take regular refresher training, particularly in areas such as safeguarding, infection control and basic life support.
You take an online multiple-choice assessment covering the 16 standards. The pass mark is 60% and you see your result immediately. If you do not pass first time, you can retake the assessment as many times as you need at no extra cost.
Yes. No previous experience or qualifications are needed, so it suits agency and temporary workers, family and unpaid carers, career changers and international learners preparing for UK care roles. Check with your employer or recruiter what proof of training they require.
